Technologies and Automated Control Systems for Rolling and Hardware Production Processes

Development of the Rolling Mill Practices for Roughing Mills

Since 1992 RPC "Donix" has been developing new rolling patterns and ingot drafting schedules as well as roll pass designs for roughing mills, allowing to reduce the discharge coefficient of the production processes.

The suggested package plan includes:

  • Optimization of the working roll passes shape to improve the ingot's central layers processing.
  • Changing the rolling pattern: the ingot is turned with its big end forward to rolling, in order to reduce the backfins at the ends of the ingot.
  • Installation of control systems for the roughing mill main drive, which ensure the ingot's firm biting and no-slip rolling.
  • Optimization of the drafting schedules in compliance with the new form of the roll passes and the new rolling pattern.

The developments of RPC "Donix" in the field of roughing and billet production processes are successfully used at rolling plants of Ukrainian metallurgical works.

Implementation of new working roll pass designs on blooming mills of Enakievo Metallurgical Works, Dneprodzerzhinsk and Makeevka Integrated Metallurgical Works, on blooming mills #1 and #2 of Krivoi Rog State Integrated Mining and Metallurgical Works "Ùrivorozhstal" allowed to increase the quality metal yield by 5-8 kg per ton of the rolled stock.

Quality metal saving up to 12 kg per ton was achieved on the slabbing mill of Integrated Metallurgical Works "Zaporozhstal" and on the roughing and billet mills of KRSIMMW "Ùrivorozhstal", due to reducing the backfins at the front and back end of the stock and eliminating the risk of the stock front part rupture during transit rolling on continuous mills after processing on the blooming (slabbing) mill.

On the basis of continuous record of the equipment load and power consumption for the metal deformation per rolling cycle, we have developed an automated information-expert tracking system for the ingot heating and rolling process on the "roughing - continuous hot-rolling mill" complex.

In 2000 the system was implemented and is in operation on the slabbing mill of the JSC "Zaporozhstal".

The systems, provided by RPC "Donix" for roughing and billet production processes, can be efficiently used at Zaporozhye Integrated Metallurgical Works "Dneprospezstal", Donetsk Metallurgical Works, Illich Integrated Metallurgical Works and "Azovstal" (Mariupol).
